According to the Public Relations Office of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO, as reported by a journalist from Ettelaat newspaper:<\/p>\n

Love is the essence of existence. A person in love is generous and kind, and sees nothing but goodness and beauty in everyone and everything. When we fall in love and an unspoken secret takes hold of our being, we become pure, clear and sincere, like an innocent child.<\/p>\n

When the sorrow of being far from home takes hold of our hearts, or our lives are overshadowed by the grief of losing a loved one, and when we lose hope in everyone and everything, the Master of Shiraz carries us to the heavens on his wings, soothes the wounds of our hearts, comforts us in times of hardship, and teaches us patience in times of calamity. He shares our joys, keeps us company in our poverty, and shows us the path of acceptance, surrender and forgiveness. He purifies our souls and spirits and guides us towards true happiness, namely love.<\/p>\n

Hafez never turns anyone away disappointed. He brings no bad tidings and judges no one. Hafez is only an enemy of hypocrisy; whoever is hypocritical does not know Hafez.<\/p>\n

Love in the Classical Literature of Iran<\/h3>\n

Dr. Abdolmahdi Mostakin, Professor of Persian Language and Literature and Director of the Culture Department of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO<\/strong>, speaks about love and its meaning in the works of the great figures of Persian literature: \u201cLove is fundamentally the foundation of the work of all the great figures, distinguished personalities and cultural luminaries of classical Iranian literature. Seven outstanding cultural figures of our land; Saadi, Rumi, Attar, Nezami, Khayyam, Ferdowsi and Hafez left us enduring works through their distinctive perspectives on love.<\/p>\n

In the view of the poets and great figures of Persian literature, that divine particle which God has placed within us is love, and attaining union with love is not easily achieved.<\/p>\n

When the beloved displays coyness, show your need.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The professor of literature explains: \u201cIn Hafez\u2019s view, the beloved is always in the position of coyness, while the lover is in the position of need. Saadi, who was Hafez\u2019s master, tells a story in which two lovers are travelling in a boat when the sea becomes stormy and they are thrown from the boat into the turbulent waters. A sailor comes to take the young man\u2019s hand, but the young man says: \u2018Leave me and take the hand of my beloved. My life has no value at all; save the life of my beloved.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr. Mostakin emphasizes: \u201cIf love does not flow within a human being, that person cannot attain higher stages. Earthly love is the prelude to heavenly love. Unless you honor the Layla of this world, you cannot join the Layla of the universe. God created women in the status and position of the beloved.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you recognize and cherish this divine gift entrusted to you, you will preserve the dignity and status of your wives, mothers and daughters as you should, and regard them with an enlightened perspective, safeguarding the esteemed status of women.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen the Layla of the universe will also regard you as possessing the qualities necessary to enter the true world of love.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Painter and Master of Words<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dr. Mostakin notes: \u201cHafez drew upon some 40 figures who preceded him, from Fakhr al-Din Iraqi to Nezami, Saadi, Khwaju Kermani, Owhedi Maraghei and others. Yet he truly transformed the words he had learned into works of art, refined them, and adorned them with beauty and ornamentation, thereby securing a distinctive place among the great poets. To such an extent that Wolfgang Goethe, the German poet, writer and painter, said: \u2018Hafez, your words are like bride and groom, and when you place them beside one another, it is as though they enter the bridal chamber. With these imaginative images of yours, you have made me your disciple!\u2019<\/p>\n

The professor of Persian language and literature says: \u201cAs Rumi puts it, there are two kinds of people: those who look to the end and those whose eyes are fixed on the trough.<\/p>\n

\u201cA person who looks to the end is one who is not easily deceived; from the outset, they see the harms, crises and challenges along the path and are not deceived by the seductions and enchantments of the world.<\/p>\n

But those whose eyes are fixed on the trough are\u00a0like horses and mules, their heads are always in the trough, and they carry with them the fleeting pleasures of the world. Hafez, however, is a \u2018rind\u2019 in this respect, meaning that none of the deceptions of the world can exert an influence upon him:<\/p>\n

I speak openly, and I rejoice in what I say;
\nI am a servant of love and free from both worlds.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe has freed himself from both worlds, and expresses this freedom beautifully in the following verse:<\/p>\n

I am a bird of the sacred garden; how can I describe the pain of separation,
\nFor how did I come to fall into this house of calamity?<\/p>\n

\u201cHafez calls this place a \u2018house of calamity\u2019, echoing the account of separation that Rumi presents in the Masnavi:<\/p>\n

I need a breast torn apart by separation
\nSo that I may tell the story of the pain of longing.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the distinctive \u2018rind\u2019 dimension of Hafez. Hafez\u2019s art lies in his ability to reveal desires such as greed, envy, resentment and avarice within human beings and to lift the veil from their ugly faces.<\/p>\n

A Master of the Journey Inward<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dr. Mostakin recalls: \u201cOur country has continually been subjected to incursions by foreign powers. In order to withstand these incursions, we have always sought refuge in lofty mystical and lyrical concepts. Shiraz was occupied eight times by the rulers of Hafez\u2019s time:<\/p>\n

Within my weary heart I know not who resides;
\nI am silent, while he is in lamentation and tumult.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is true that Hafez never travelled and that even the one or two occasions on which he intended to travel to Yazd never came to pass:<\/p>\n

O breeze, convey to the inhabitants of the city of Yazd from us:
\n\u2018O you whose polo ball is the head of those who fail to recognize the Truth.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cAlthough he never left his beloved Shiraz, he was a master of the journey inward. To attain spiritual love and discover the divine light within, one must continually journey inward. This is precisely what Hafez did, and it was through this inward journey that he became Lesan al-Ghayb, the \u2018Tongue of the Unseen.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
