Dr. Hassan Fartousi, Secretary-General of the National Commission for UNESCO in Iran, stated at the 13th Science Promotion Week event: \u201cIn light of the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development, this year\u2019s theme for World Science Day has been selected as \u2018Harnessing the Power of Thought and Empowering the Future.\u2019 This theme highlights the unparalleled importance of creative thinking and innovation in driving scientific and technological advances and shaping a more prosperous and brighter future.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The 13th Science Promotion Week began on 9 November 2024, coinciding with the observance of World Science Day for Peace and Development, at the Mina Dome Planetarium, located in the Abbas Abad Cultural and Tourism Complex. Special programs for the event will continue through Thursday, 14 November 2024.<\/p>\n

World Science Day for Peace and Development provides an opportunity to strengthen the connection between societies and science and to raise awareness of scientific advances worldwide. The day highlights the important role of scientists in increasing public understanding of the state of our planet and its implications for building sustainable societies. In Iran, Science Promotion Week is held annually to coincide with this international observance.<\/p>\n

At the opening ceremony, Dr. Hassan Fartousi, Secretary-General of the National Commission for UNESCO in Iran; Seyyed Mohammad-Hossein Hejazi, Managing Director of the Abbas Abad Cultural and Tourism Complex; Dr. Gholamreza Goudarzi, Head of the Statistical Center of Iran; Dr. Javad Darvish, Director of the Foundation for the Support of Humanities; Dr. Akram Ghadimi, President of the Iranian Association for Science Promotion and Chairholder of the UNESCO Chair on Science Promotion; and Mehrasa Mardadi, Head of the Natural Sciences Section of the UNESCO Office in Tehran, delivered speeches.<\/p>\n

In the Name of God, the Creator of Wisdom<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dr. Akram Ghadimi, esteemed President of the Iranian Association for Science Promotion,<\/p>\n

Dr. Gholamreza Goudarzi, esteemed Head of the Statistical Center of Iran,<\/p>\n

Distinguished representatives of the UNESCO Office in Tehran, the Institute for the Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults, and the Abbas Abad Cultural and Tourism Complex,<\/p>\n

Esteemed guests, ladies and gentlemen,<\/p>\n

Today, we have gathered here to commemorate World Science Day for Peace and Development; a day that reminds us of the importance of science and technology in our lives and their role in transforming and advancing societies, while providing an opportunity to celebrate scientific achievements.<\/p>\n

From the discovery of fire to today\u2019s digital world, scientific advances have continually guided us towards a brighter and better future. Science has not only expanded our understanding of the world, but has also improved our quality of life, fostered the development of new technologies, and helped address many global challenges. Each of these innovations is the result of relentless scientific endeavor. From medicines that safeguard our health to smartphones that constantly capture our attention, science has empowered us to travel long distances in the shortest possible time, communicate with people around the world, and access vast sources of information.<\/p>\n

Of course, science is not merely a collection of knowledge and information; it is also a way of approaching life that teaches us to view the world with curiosity, to ask questions, and to seek new answers. This is where the saying \u201c<\/strong>al-\u2018ilm sultan\u201d, knowledge is power, finds its meaning.<\/p>\n

In August 2023, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the period 2024\u20132033 as the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development. The Decade, led by UNESCO, aims to mobilize a broad range of scientific disciplines, including the natural and applied sciences, social and human sciences, as well as interdisciplinary and emerging fields, to contribute to transformative change in societies, economies, and the environment.<\/p>\n

Indeed, promoting international cooperation in science and technology, expanding access to scientific education, and strengthening research capacities in developing countries are among the principal objectives of the Decade. Its designation provides people around the world with an opportunity to share knowledge and resources and to work together towards a more sustainable and equitable future. By enhancing scientific literacy and encouraging cooperation among governments, United Nations agencies, the private sector, and civil society, the Decade seeks to strengthen the role of science in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals and in building a safer, more prosperous, and peaceful future for all.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s theme for World Science Day, in light of the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development, is \u201cHarnessing the Power of Thought and Empowering the Future.\u201d<\/strong> This theme highlights the unparalleled importance of creative thinking and innovation in driving scientific and technological progress and shaping a brighter and better future.<\/p>\n

Creative and innovative thinking means going beyond the frameworks to which our minds have become accustomed, having the courage to question and explore the unknown, and enabling us to approach the challenges before us from fresh and innovative perspectives. And is it not true that the greatest inventions and discoveries throughout history have emerged from creative and critical thinking?<\/p>\n

From ancient times through the Industrial Revolution, the Information Age, the present day, and into the future, all bear witness to the unparalleled power of creative thinking. It is therefore essential that we remind ourselves of our responsibility to encourage young people and future generations to think freely and creatively, while nurturing them with a strong commitment to human and higher values.<\/p>\n

In this way, we can hope that future generations in our country and around the world will pursue new solutions to the challenges ahead while embracing an ethical and humane way of life.<\/p>\n

At this point, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to everyone involved in commemorating this important day and organizing this magnificent gathering, particularly Dr. Akram Ghadimi, esteemed President of the Iranian Association for Science Promotion and Chairholder of the UNESCO Chair, as well as all the distinguished scholars and experts present here for their participation and attention.<\/p>\n
