The International Centre on Qanat and Historic Hydraulic Structures in Yazd hosted a conference of UNESCO Category 2 Centres on 15 December 2024, with the aim of defining joint projects on a range of issues.<\/p>\n

The meeting was attended by the heads and representatives of UNESCO Category 2 Centres, Dr. Hassan Fartousi, Secretary-General of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO; Yeng Sarang, Head of the UNESCO Office in Tehran; and representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Dr. Hassan Fartousi, Secretary-General of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO, stated: \u201cIt is a pleasure to attend today\u2019s second meeting to explore cooperation and strengthen synergies among UNESCO Category 2 Centres. UNESCO, as an international organization, has consistently sought to promote global peace and well-being through education, science, culture and communication. In this mission, Category 2 Centres play an important role by advancing UNESCO\u2019s objectives and helping to extend their impact at the global level.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cAs we know, one of the most valuable opportunities provided by Category 2 Centres is to establish links between host countries and international research and cooperation networks. By providing access to global knowledge and expertise, these centres strengthen scientific and research capacities and play an effective role in advancing science and technology.\u201d<\/p>\n

Category 2 Centres Help Enhance Advanced Knowledge and Skills<\/h3>\n

The Secretary-General of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO emphasized: \u201cThese centres enhance the quality of education in host countries through educational programmes and specialized courses. By offering advanced courses, training workshops and international projects, these centres help students and researchers acquire advanced knowledge and skills, thereby fostering scientific and professional development.\u201d<\/p>\n

Category 2 Centres Promote Mutual Understanding among Nations<\/h3>\n

Fartousi added: \u201cCategory 2 Centres also play an important role in preserving and promoting science, as well as cultural and artistic heritage. By organizing cultural events, exhibitions and festivals, these centres provide opportunities for scientific and cultural exchange and, by strengthening national identity, also contribute to promoting mutual understanding among nations.\u201d<\/p>\n

He further noted that Category 2 Centres serve as international bridges, stating: \u201cBy establishing cooperation networks and hosting international conferences and meetings, these centres provide unique opportunities for exchanging ideas and best practices, thereby strengthening international relations and multilateral cooperation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Category 2 Centres Contribute to Achieving UNESCO\u2019s National and Global Objectives<\/h3>\n

Fartousi identified a focus on research and development, improving the quality of education, promoting culture and the arts, and strengthening international cooperation as among the key components of Category 2 Centres that contribute to achieving UNESCO\u2019s national and global objectives.<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cI am honoured to reiterate the readiness of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO to cooperate with the National Commissions of other countries. We are fully committed to facilitating communication and coordination between Category 2 Centres and UNESCO Headquarters. The National Commission serves as a bridge between national organizations and UNESCO, ensuring that the objectives of these centres are aligned with national development priorities and UNESCO\u2019s broader vision.\u201d<\/p>\n

Referring to the challenges faced by Category 2 Centres, the Secretary-General stated: \u201cAddressing these challenges requires collective effort and coordination. With greater cooperation among the centres and the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO, I am confident that we can overcome these obstacles and make full use of the potential of these centres.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fartousi concluded by expressing hope that the meeting would pave the way for constructive cooperation and the exchange of experiences among the centres, adding that, through collective thinking and cooperation, they could take steps towards achieving a brighter and more sustainable future for all.<\/p>\n

Facilitating International Scientific Cooperation Was the Initial Idea behind the Establishment of Category 2 Centres<\/h3>\n

Dr. Ahmad Pakatchi, Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of the Islamic Republic of Iran to UNESCO, also referred in his remarks to the ability of the centres to facilitate international scientific cooperation as the original idea behind their establishment. He added: \u201cIt is not sufficient for these centres merely to report to UNESCO; they must actively participate in UNESCO meetings and programs. This will increase the visibility of the centres and contribute to their greater success in regional and international cooperation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pakatchi emphasized that communication between the centres and the Permanent Delegation should take place through the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO.<\/p>\n

The meeting was attended by Dr. Hassan Fartousi, Secretary-General of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO; Dr. Ahmad Pakatchi, Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of the Islamic Republic of Iran to UNESCO; Mohammad Hajrasouliha, Director of the UNESCO Regional Centre on Urban Water Management and Adviser to the Minister of Energy; Dr. Mohammad-Mehdi Javadianzadeh, Head of the International Centre on Qanat and Historic Hydraulic Structures; Dr. Toufiq Sedigh-Mostahkam, Head of the Department of International Scientific Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Mojtaba Akbari, Head of the International Affairs Centre of the Ministry of Energy; Dr. Mozhgan Yazdianpour, representative of the Regional Centre for the Development of Science Parks and Technology Incubators; Dr. Atousa Momeni, Director of the Regional Research Centre for Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage in Western and Central Asia; Dr. Morteza Tavakoli, Head of the Iranian National Institute for Oceanography and Atmospheric Science and Head of the Regional Educational and Research Centre for Oceanography for Western Asia; Dr. Hamid Nouri, Director of the International Centre for Integrated Watershed Management and Bio-Resources; Dr. Seyed Hamid Aghaei, Head of the International Centre for Basic Medical Sciences and Human Nutrition; and Dr. Kambod Amini-Hosseini, Head of the Regional Educational and Research Centre for Earthquake Risk Management and Resilience for Western and Central Asia.<\/p>\n

In the afternoon of 15 December, a meeting was held at the Office of the President of the University of Yazd with the participation of Dr. Fartousi and his delegation, Yeng Sarang and his delegation, and Dr. Abbas Kalantari, President of the University of Yazd. The meeting focused on joint cooperation, and Dr. Kalantari introduced the university\u2019s capacities.<\/p>\n

During the subsequent visit to the University of Yazd, the Secretary-General of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO visited the Professor Najafi Abrandabadi Library of Law and Criminal Sciences, located in the Adl Building of the University of Yazd. The visit was attended by Dr. Ali-Akbar Jafari, Dean of the Faculty of Law, Political Science and History at the University of Yazd.<\/p>\n
