These reserves, which serve both as sanctuaries for biodiversity and as laboratories for innovation, offer a clear example of how coexistence and a new balance between humans and nature can be achieved, bringing modern science and Indigenous knowledge together.<\/p>\n<p>Biosphere reserves are much more than protected areas. From small island communities to extensive ecological corridors that sometimes connect entire continents, these areas are home to hundreds of millions of people who live, work and interact with the nature around them. For example, in Nigeria, UNESCO supports 3,000 families in the Oban and Omo Biosphere Reserves in creating sustainable livelihoods linked to biodiversity. This effort contributes both to environmental conservation and to improving the livelihoods of local communities.<\/p>\n<p>Since the launch of the Programme in 1971, a unique global network has emerged, now comprising 784 biosphere reserves in 142 countries. Together, these areas cover more than 5% of the Earth\u2019s land surface\u2014an area equivalent to the size of Australia\u2014and are home to more than 300 million people.<\/p>\n<p>At the Fifth World Congress of Biosphere Reserves, held in Hangzhou, China, in September this year, Member States adopted the Hangzhou Strategic Plan, a roadmap for the coming decade aimed at strengthening the role of biosphere reserves in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and promoting coexistence between humans and nature.<\/p>\n<p>A key pillar of our work is expanding scientific knowledge of the challenges facing these reserves. For example, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, UNESCO is transforming the Yangambi Biosphere Reserve into a leading climate observation centre. Its research infrastructure is being strengthened, and advanced technologies such as remote sensing are being used to monitor the region\u2019s plant and animal life. At the same time, local communities are receiving training in natural resource management.<\/p>\n<p>On this International Day of Biosphere Reserves, we celebrate the vital connection between humanity and the living world and honour the remarkable achievements of the Man and the Biosphere Programme. We also recognize those who drive this Programme forward: young people working towards peace with nature, and Indigenous communities whose invaluable knowledge and profound understanding of the Earth underpin the sustainability of these areas.<\/p>\n<p>I invite everyone who has not yet had the opportunity to visit a biosphere reserve to experience one firsthand.
