UNESCO will celebrate World Teachers\u2019 Day 2026 with a focus on the status of the teaching profession, marking the 60th anniversary of the adoption of the UNESCO\/ILO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers.<\/strong><\/p><\/p>\n\n

World Teachers\u2019 Day 2026, under the theme \u201cStanding with Teachers: 60 Years of Supporting the Profession, Elevating Its Status, and Shaping Our Future,\u201d<\/strong> will be celebrated on October 5, 2026.<\/p>

The occasion will mark the 60th anniversary of the adoption, in 1966, of the UNESCO\/ILO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. The Recommendation was developed to establish common standards for the teaching profession and ensure that teachers enjoy a status commensurate with their role in education and society.<\/p><\/p>\n\n

The World Teachers\u2019 Day 2026 announcement highlights teachers\u2019 status across three dimensions: symbolic and social, professional, and material. Accordingly, teachers\u2019 social status refers to the respect and value society accords to their profession; their professional status encompasses competence, accountability, and authority; and their material status relates to financial support, working conditions, and the resources needed to fulfil their role effectively. \n<\/p>\n\n

This theme is particularly relevant at a time when teachers are facing new developments and challenges, including digital technologies and artificial intelligence, climate change, migration, conflict and displacement, learner well-being, and uncertain futures. Meanwhile, teachers\u2019 working conditions\u2014including salaries, workloads, work environments, and access to resources\u2014often prevent them from fully fulfilling their roles. \n<\/p>\n\n

World Teachers\u2019 Day 2026 will also provide an opportunity to examine the goals that societies today set for education, the role teachers play in achieving these goals, and the barriers that prevent them from fulfilling this role. The event will also address the ongoing revision of the 1966 Recommendation, the role of social dialogue and collective bargaining, and the importance of data and evidence in shaping policies on the status of teachers. \n<\/p>\n\n

According to UNESCO statistics, the world needs an additional 50 million teachers to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 4 by 2030. Sustained investment in education must go hand in hand with efforts to strengthen teachers\u2019 status, improve their working conditions, and support their professional development.<\/p>

The international World Teachers\u2019 Day 2026 event will be held on October 5, 2026, at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. The program will consist of two main sessions. The morning session will feature the official World Teachers\u2019 Day ceremony and the presentation of the UNESCO\u2013Hamdan Prize for Teacher Development. In the afternoon, a high-level dialogue will bring together Ministers of Education and international experts to discuss ways to elevate teachers\u2019 status and support the transformation of the teaching profession.<\/p>

Representatives of the International Labour Organization (ILO), UNICEF, and Education International, as well as representatives of the Hamdan Foundation, teacher educators, academics, youth organization representatives, and teachers, will also attend the event.<\/p><\/p>\n\n
