The 9th Edition of the National Scientific Excellence Program | Iranian National Commission for UNESCO

The 9th edition of the National Scientific Excellence Program was held on 10 November 2024, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the Espinas Hotel in Tehran, with the participation of Dr. Hossein Afshin, Vice President for Science, Technology and Knowledge-Based Economy; Dr. Hossein Simaei-Sarraf, Minister of Science, Research and Technology; Dr. Hassan Fartousi, Secretary-General of the National Commission for UNESCO in Iran; and a number of officials and distinguished researchers.

During the event, 57 distinguished scientific researchers and three universities were honored for their outstanding scientific achievements.

This year, the 9th National Scientific Excellence Program was held as a competitive initiative, using recognized scientometric indicators to strengthen scientific standing and enhance the quality of scientific research in the country. Distinguished researchers were selected from among academics and researchers at universities and scientific and research institutions nationwide who had produced outstanding scientific publications. The selected researchers will receive support in the form of cash research grants, grants for services provided by the Strategic Technologies Laboratory Network, and support for recruiting and employing postdoctoral researchers, in accordance with the guidelines of the Iran National Science Foundation (INSF).

Accordingly, the Iran National Science Foundation held the 9th National Scientific Excellence Support Program in 2024, with the aim of strengthening scientific standing, enhancing scientific quality in the country, and contributing to the advancement of research conducted by leading researchers.

Following extensive evaluation and peer review based on scientific indicators and in accordance with the guidelines approved by the Foundation’s Scientific Council, the Iran National Science Foundation selected and introduced leading researchers from among the country’s distinguished scientific community in three categories, based on their publications in influential, leading, and selected journals.

1. Category One – Influential Journals:
Researchers who have published outstanding papers in Category A journals. These researchers receive a 5 billion Iranian rial grant, together with a certificate and commemorative medal.

2. Category Two – Leading Journals:
Researchers who have published outstanding papers in Category C journals. They receive a 4 billion Iranian rial grant, together with a certificate and commemorative medal.

3. Category Three – Selected Journals:
Researchers who have published their papers in Category D journals. These researchers receive a 3 billion Iranian rial grant, together with a certificate and commemorative medal.

At the ceremony, 57 distinguished scientific researchers and three leading universities were honored. Sharif University of Technology, Tarbiat Modares University, and the Graduate University of Advanced Sciences and Technology of Gavazang, Zanjan, were named the three leading universities of the 9th National Scientific Excellence Program.

A special award was also presented to four researchers: Saeed Sarkar, former Secretary of the Nano Technology Innovation Council; Saadollah Nasiri Gheydari, President of the Graduate University of Advanced Sciences and Technology of Gavazang, Zanjan; Seyyed Abbas Mousavi, President of Sharif University of Technology; and Yousef Hojjat, President of Tarbiat Modares University in recognition of their contributions to the promotion of science.

It should be noted that Sahar Ahmadizadeh, Director of the Natural Sciences Group, and Maryam Sanaei, Assistant to the Secretary-General of the National Commission for UNESCO in Iran, also attended the program.
