National Committee for Higher Education
The National Committee for Higher Education contributes to the advancement and development of the country’s higher education system by identifying capacities, strengthening national and international cooperation, leveraging UNESCO programs, and supporting the development of higher education.
Introduction
The Committee was established with the aim of enhancing the quality of higher education in the country and contributing to global developments in higher education. The National Committee for Higher Education works to operationalize and adapt UNESCO’s higher education programs to the national context, with particular emphasis on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially the post-2015 education agenda. By analysing the country’s needs, achievements, and progress in higher education, the Committee also facilitates the reflection of these achievements and developments in UNESCO’s future policymaking.
The main areas of activity of the National Committee for Higher Education of the National Commission for UNESCO, established to promote coordination, dialogue, and national consensus among the various stakeholders in higher education, include: enhancing quality assurance standards in higher education; internationalization of higher education; reform and innovation in higher education; strengthening the responsiveness of higher education to economic and social development needs; fostering university–industry collaboration; promoting ethics in higher education; foresight and forward planning in higher education; and promoting lifelong learning opportunities and open and distance learning approaches in higher education.
The Committee comprises representatives from the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology; the Ministry of Health and Medical Education; the Academy of Sciences; the Vice Presidency for Science and Technology; public and Islamic Azad universities; as well as leading experts in higher education in Iran.
