Meeting between the Secretary-General of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO and the Mayor of Kermanshah

Dr Hasan Fartousi, Secretary-General of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO, held a joint meeting with Dr Nader Norouzi, Mayor of Kermanshah, during which they discussed and exchanged views on the UNESCO Creative Cities Network and the development of cultural cooperation.


The meeting was held on 11 February 2025 at the office of the Secretary-General of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO. During the meeting, Dr Fartousi commended Kermanshah’s remarkable progress within the UNESCO Creative Cities Network and stated: “Through its exemplary efforts in networking, submitting proposals and implementing UNESCO guidelines, Kermanshah has been a pioneer.”

He also congratulated Kermanshah on its selection as the Cultural Capital of Asian Cities for 2025, as well as Dr Nader Norouzi, Mayor of Kermanshah, on his appointment as Chair of the Social Health Committee of the Asian Mayors Forum.

During the meeting, Dr Norouzi, Mayor of Kermanshah, also emphasized UNESCO’s key role in cultural development and stated: “UNESCO plays a pivotal role in cultural development, and with the support of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO, we will also strive to strengthen international cooperation.”

Referring to the importance of city diplomacy, he added: “City diplomacy can help address many challenges and can play an effective role in the development of tourism and culture. We will pursue this path with determination.”

The establishment of a Creative Cities Secretariat was another topic discussed at the meeting. The Mayor of Kermanshah emphasized: “The establishment of this Secretariat will be an important and impactful step that requires the participation of other cities.”

It should be noted that the meeting was attended by Haj Hashem Darvishi, Chair of the City Council; Boroumand Namdari, Director-General of the Municipality’s Inspection Department; Iman Derakhshi, Head of the Cultural Organization; and Mastaneh Karimi, Head of the Kermanshah Municipality’s Investment Organization, as well as managers and advisers of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO.
