To promote ethical research in the field of artificial intelligence, UNESCO, in cooperation with the Government of Uzbekistan, has established the “UNESCO–Uzbekistan Al-Biruni Award”. Named after the great scholar Al-Biruni, a symbol of scientific advancement and cultural exchange, the Award aims to encourage scientific cooperation, international dialogue and the responsible use of artificial intelligence.
The Award will be presented every two years to three laureates, who may be individuals, institutions or organizations whose scientific achievements, effective policymaking or practical innovations have made a significant contribution to advancing ethics in artificial intelligence. These achievements must also be aligned with the principles of UNESCO’s Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence.
The first edition of the Award will be held in November 2025 in the historic city of Samarkand, Uzbekistan. This event represents an important step towards fulfilling UNESCO’s mission of harnessing emerging technologies to serve all humanity.
