UNESCO Approves Extension of the UNESCO Chair in Coastal Geological Hazards

UNESCO has approved the extension of the activities of the UNESCO Chair in Coastal Geological Hazards, headed by Dr. Hamid Nazari at the Institute for Earth Sciences. Under UNESCO’s decision, the Chair’s activities have been extended for a new term until 31 December 2029.

The decision was made following an evaluation of the Chair’s performance and achievements in the fields of education and research, reflecting its scientific standing and effective role in advancing knowledge and specialized cooperation related to geological hazards in coastal areas.

In recent years, the UNESCO Chair in Coastal Geological Hazards has played an important role in identifying, assessing, and managing geological hazards along coastlines and in marine areas through research projects, specialized meetings and workshops, and the development of scientific cooperation.

The extension of the Chair’s term reflects UNESCO’s confidence in the country’s scientific capacities and reaffirms the effective role of Iranian researchers in advancing knowledge of coastal geological hazards, reducing risk, and enhancing the resilience of coastal communities to natural hazards.
