Official Request by the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO for Global Condemnation of the Attack on the Minab School

Dr. Hassan Fartousi, Secretary-General of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO, sent an official letter to Ms. Lidia Brito, UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General for Africa Priority and External Relations, describing the attack on a primary school in the city of Minab and the killing of more than one hundred students and teachers as a “clear violation of international humanitarian law.” He called for an official condemnation of the attack and immediate action by the international organization.

In the letter, the American–Israeli airstrike on a primary school in the city of Minab in southern Iran is described as “a devastating tragedy for the country’s educational community,” stating that hundreds of students lost their lives in the attack.

The Secretary-General of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO also emphasized that, under international humanitarian law and United Nations Security Council resolutions, schools and educational institutions must be protected from all forms of attack.

The letter states that the killing of students and the destruction of educational infrastructure constitute grave violations of the Geneva Conventions and the fundamental principles governing the protection of civilians.

It further calls on UNESCO, as the global organization dedicated to education and peace, to adopt the strongest possible position in response to this act and urge all parties to the conflict to uphold their international obligations.

The letter concludes by reaffirming UNESCO’s commitment to justice and human rights and emphasizing that safeguarding the security of students, teachers, and educational institutions must be a top priority for the international community.
