UNESCO: Damage to Golestan Palace Is a Stark Warning for Cultural Heritage Protection amid War

۲ مارس-۲۰۲۶

UNESCO has issued a statement expressing deep concern over the escalation of violence in the Middle East and emphasizing the urgent need to protect cultural heritage sites. These concerns have taken on greater significance following reports of damage to Golestan Palace in Tehran, a property inscribed on the World Heritage List.

According to reports, Golestan Palace was damaged on Monday, 2 March, following falling debris and the shockwaves caused by an airstrike on Arg Square. The incident once again highlights the vulnerability of cultural heritage amid military crises.

UNESCO has stated that it is closely monitoring the condition of cultural heritage in Iran and throughout the region and is taking the necessary measures to safeguard these valuable treasures.

According to the Organization, the geographical coordinates of properties inscribed on the World Heritage List, as well as sites of national significance, have been communicated to all parties to the conflict to prevent any potential damage.

Recalling the obligations arising from the 1954 Hague Convention and the 1972 Convention, the international organization has called on all parties to uphold their responsibilities regarding the protection of cultural property.

UNESCO has emphasized that the destruction of or damage to these sites constitutes an assault on history, identity, and the shared memory of humanity and must be pursued with resolve.
