Strengthening Interactions among Iran’s Creative Cities in UNESCO: A Step towards Sustainable Development

Secretary-General of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO: Greater Interaction among Iran’s Creative Cities Will Pave the Way for Sustainable Development

At the meeting of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in Iran, hosted by Sanandaj on 26 April 2025, Dr. Hasan Fartousi, Secretary-General of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO, emphasized the need to strengthen cooperation and interaction among Creative Cities, stating: “Greater interaction among Creative Cities will not only expand cultural and artistic opportunities, but will also pave the way for sustainable development.”

Fartousi outlined six key strategies for the sustainable development of Iran’s Creative Cities and called on the heads and secretaries of the Creative Cities to give particular attention to the concepts of sustainable development and UNESCO’s cultural priorities. He added: “Preserving cultural heritage, addressing the digital divide and responding to climate change should be incorporated into the programs of these cities.”

Invitation to Attend the UNESCO Global Conference

Referring to the 17th UNESCO Creative Cities Network Global Conference, to be held in France with the theme “Culture and Artificial Intelligence,” he also announced an invitation for Iran’s Creative Cities to participate in the event. He called on mayors and secretaries to make use of the available opportunities and submit their proposals to UNESCO on cultural diversity and the cultural economy.

Opportunities for the Exchange of Cultural and Artistic Experiences

Seyed Anwar Rashidi, Mayor of Sanandaj, also expressed his appreciation to the Governor-General and provincial officials at the meeting, describing the presence of the Secretary-General of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO in Kurdistan as a valuable opportunity. He stated: “This meeting, attended by mayors, city councils and representatives of Creative Cities, provided a platform for the exchange of experiences and greater convergence.”

Referring to Sanandaj’s historical, cultural and artistic capacities, Rashidi described the balanced development of infrastructure with a focus on social justice as one of the approaches of urban management and added: “The Sanandaj Municipality is determined to enhance the city’s position as a Creative City of Music at the global level.”

Organization of Major Cultural and Artistic Events

He also highlighted the organization of 26 major cultural and artistic events during Sanandaj Week and described the meeting of mayors of Creative Cities of Music as a golden opportunity to expand international cooperation. In conclusion, the Mayor of Sanandaj emphasized the importance of supporting the development of Sanandaj as a Creative City of Music and stated: “Through synergy among various institutions and organizations, effective steps can be taken to enhance the city’s cultural and artistic standing.”
