
Kurdistan, Iran’s Shining Jewel: The Need to Include “Sanandaj Day” in the National Calendar

During a recent meeting between Dr. Hasan Fartousi, Secretary-General of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO, and Arash Lahouni, Governor-General of Kurdistan Province, held on 26 April 2025, Kurdistan was described as a shining jewel of Iran. Dr. Fartousi emphasized the province’s unique cultural, historical and natural capacities and called for greater recognition of its prominent figures at the national and international levels.
Kurdistan, a Cultural and Artistic Land of Global Value
Expressing his satisfaction with the appointment of a capable local governor, Fartousi stated: “Through their determination and exemplary perseverance, the people of Kurdistan have developed their homeland, and this spirit should continue among officials in pursuit of the province’s comprehensive development.” He went on to describe Sanandaj as a city of art and music and added: “The province’s tangible and intangible cultural and natural heritage constitute valuable assets for enhancing its standing at the national and international levels.”
The Need to Include “Seneh Day” in the National Calendar
During the meeting, Arash Lahouni, Governor-General of Kurdistan Province, expressed his appreciation for the presence of the Secretary-General of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO and the efforts of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO to promote Iran’s capacities, emphasizing the provincial authorities’ commitment to the balanced development of Kurdistan. Referring to 26 April as “Seneh Day,” he also called for the official inclusion of the day in the national calendar, describing it as an important step towards preserving the cultural and historical identity of Sanandaj.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the need for greater synergy among national and international institutions to better introduce Kurdistan to the world was emphasized.
