June 5th : World Environment Day
In 1972, the United Nations held its first conference in Stockholm, focusing on human beings and the environment. At the same time, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution that paved the way for the establishment of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). |

Every year, the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) organizes a global initiative to mark this day. Activities may take the form of conferences, cycling events, essay-writing contests, painting competitions, tree planting, recycling initiatives, environmental clean-up campaigns and other activities.
Since 1972, World Environment Day has been observed on 5 June to draw global attention, including that of the public and responsible authorities, to the need to protect the environment and address the issues that contribute to environmental pollution.
In 2025, with a focus on plastic pollution, World Environment Day launched a campaign to address this issue, which was also displayed on the giant screens in New York’s Times Square. Launched in 2011, this initiative uses LG’s iconic display screens to raise awareness of critical environmental issues through public service announcement videos.
As part of UNEP’s 2025 campaign, a video entitled “What Can Nature Teach Us?” highlights the importance of learning from nature’s wisdom and guiding collective action to eliminate plastic pollution.
In Iran, 5 June is also designated as World Environment Day in the calendar. It provides an opportunity to raise awareness and disseminate information about the vital responsibility of protecting the environment, as well as to promote policymaking aimed at reducing and eliminating sources of environmental pollution.
