The United States Officially Withdraws from UNESCO: A Controversial Move Against the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization
The US Department of State announced that the United States had officially ended its membership in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The decision followed years of disputes and criticism of UNESCO’s performance and has drawn widespread international attention. The Iranian National Commission for UNESCO has emphasized the importance of the Organization’s role in safeguarding cultural heritage and promoting peace and global education, while warning of the consequences of this move. |
The US Department of State cited “anti-Israel bias” and the “promotion of divisive social and cultural issues” as the main reasons for the United States’ withdrawal from UNESCO. In a statement, Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce asserted that continued cooperation with UNESCO was not in the national interest of the United States.
She also referred to Palestine’s membership in UNESCO, describing it as “highly problematic” and contrary to US policy.
A History of Disputes and Fluctuating Relations Between the United States and UNESCO
The United States’ official withdrawal from UNESCO had been anticipated during Donald Trump’s second presidency, as he had ordered the country’s withdrawal from the Organization in 2017. Following Joe Biden’s inauguration, the United States rejoined UNESCO, but has now ended its membership once again.
The United States and the Israeli regime had suspended their financial contributions to the Organization following the 2011 vote to admit Palestine as a full member of UNESCO.
UNESCO’s Global Role: Safeguarding Heritage and Promoting Global Education
As a specialized agency of the United Nations, UNESCO is responsible for promoting education, peace, culture and science, as well as safeguarding natural and cultural heritage worldwide. Through the designation of World Heritage Sites, the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage and the implementation of educational projects, the Organization plays an unparalleled role in sustainable development and the preservation of cultural identities.
The Iranian National Commission for UNESCO believes that strengthening international cooperation and upholding UNESCO’s objectives are more essential than ever, particularly in today’s complex global circumstances.
The Implications of the US Withdrawal and Future Prospects
The US decision comes at a time when regional conflicts, environmental crises and global cultural challenges require extensive mutual cooperation among countries in the fields of education and culture.
The Iranian National Commission for UNESCO emphasizes that the Organization will continue its efforts to safeguard peace, promote equitable education and protect humanity’s heritage. It also expresses hope that other Member States will work together in solidarity and cooperation to strengthen UNESCO’s role.
