Commemorating National Physical Education and Sports Day: Emphasizing the Role of Education and Culture in Promoting Public Health
Every year, 18 October is commemorated in Iran as National Physical Education and Sports Day. This occasion provides an opportunity to emphasize the importance of sports and physical activity in promoting physical and mental health, fostering a culture of public participation in sports, and strengthening social solidarity. |
In addition to improving physical fitness, sports play a key role in boosting self-confidence, promoting mental health and strengthening social participation. They can also empower individuals to face life’s challenges.
The history of physical education in Iran dates back to ancient times, when sports such as wrestling, archery and polo were valued not only as physical activities but also as integral parts of educating younger generations and preparing them for social life and the defence of their homeland. In modern times, with the establishment of modern schools and sports organizations, including the Physical Education Association in 1934, physical education became recognized as a formal pillar of the country’s educational and cultural framework.
Given its mandate to promote education, science, culture and social equity, the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO plays a special role in fostering a culture of sports and physical education. Since 2013, the National Committee for Sport and Physical Education of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO has been specifically examining UNESCO’s policies and performance, as well as the Commission’s activities, in the fields of sports and youth. It is also responsible for coordinating national capacities across relevant institutions, research institutes and ministries.
National Physical Education and Sports Day serves as a reminder that sports, health and social well-being are rights to which everyone is entitled, and that a successful society is one that can ensure equal access to these opportunities for all.
