Commemorating National Paralympic Day: A Celebration of Determination and Equality
16 October is observed in Iran as National Paralympic Day, commemorating the determination, abilities and self-confidence of champions who have turned limitations into opportunities. This day provides an opportunity to celebrate their spirit of perseverance and promote a culture of respect for the abilities of persons with disabilities. |
Although National Paralympic Day was officially included in Iran’s national calendar in 2015, the occasion had already taken shape within Iran’s wider Paralympic community in 2003, with the first celebration held in Tehran.
In subsequent years, this cultural and sporting initiative expanded to various provinces and evolved into a week-long festival featuring a diverse range of educational, recreational and sporting activities.
The proposal to designate this day as a national observance was approved on 25 August 2014 by the then President of Iran and the then Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution. It was officially included in the country’s national calendar in 2015.
Showcasing Abilities and Promoting Self-Confidence
Key objectives of National Paralympic Day include raising public awareness, showcasing the abilities of Paralympic champions, fostering self-confidence among persons with disabilities, and introducing Iran’s Paralympic sports.
Children, adolescents and young people with disabilities, their families, sports coaches and education professionals are among the event’s primary target audiences.
Alignment with UNESCO’s Ideals
National Paralympic Day symbolizes respect for human dignity and equal opportunities. In line with the objectives of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO, this national observance emphasizes the promotion of social participation, educational equity and a culture of respect for human diversity.
