Maragheh Joins the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities / Iran: An Influential Actor in the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities

With its valuable experience in urban management, Iran has so far registered nine cities in the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities.

Following official confirmation by the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL), and through the efforts and follow-up of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO, Maragheh was admitted as a new member of the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities in 2025. The official membership certificate was issued by Ms. Isabel Kempf, Director of the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning.

With this membership, Maragheh becomes the ninth Iranian city to join this prestigious global network of learning cities, strengthening its position in educational policymaking, human development, and lifelong learning.

The UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities brings together selected cities from around the world that work to promote lifelong learning, exchange management experiences, develop educational capacities, and improve citizens’ quality of life through education. Each city’s admission to the network follows a thorough assessment of its educational, cultural, managerial, and social indicators.

Maragheh’s accession to this global network provides a valuable opportunity to draw on international experience, develop educational and participatory programs, and foster a healthy and sustainable urban environment.
