Call for Applications for the 2025 UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Young Scientist Award

Every year, UNESCO announces the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Young Scientist Award with the aim of encouraging young scientists, particularly from developing countries, to conduct research on issues related to biosphere reserves and promoting the exchange of information and experience among a new generation of scientists.

Applicants for the Award must be no more than 35 years of age and should propose projects related to biosphere reserves for the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Young Scientist Award. These projects must be completed within a maximum period of two years.

It should be noted that the Award amounts to approximately US$5,000. In preparing their projects, applicants should take into account that the implementation of UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme through 2025 is guided by the Lima Action Plan and the Program’s Strategy towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Applicants should also clearly indicate how their projects are linked to the research actions under the Lima Action Plan and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Since 2022, five additional annual awards, supported by the Principality of Monaco, have been granted to studies focusing on marine, island and coastal issues in biosphere reserves. Accordingly, a total of 11 awards will be granted in 2025: six awards under the general criteria and conditions, and five additional awards for projects addressing marine, island and coastal issues in biosphere reserves.

Eligible applicants have until 7 May 2025 to submit the completed application form and their CV to the Science Group of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO at science@irunesco.org.
