Celebrating the International Women in Mathematics Day

May 12, coinciding with the birthday of the late Professor Maryam Mirzakhani, is celebrated as International Women in Mathematics Day.

This day has been celebrated since 2019 to honour the role and achievements of women in mathematics and promote equal participation in mathematical sciences worldwide.

In 2014, the distinguished Iranian mathematician Dr. Maryam Mirzakhani became the first woman and the first Iranian to receive the prestigious Fields Medal, the highest international award in mathematics. She received the medal in recognition of her “outstanding contributions to the dynamics and geometry of Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces.” Prior to this achievement, she had won two gold medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad, along with other international scientific awards. She also served as a professor and researcher at Stanford and Princeton universities.

The designation of this international day pays tribute to the scientific legacy of this inspiring Iranian mathematician, whose achievements continue to inspire younger generations, particularly women and girls interested in mathematics and the basic sciences around the world.
