Condolence Message from the Secretary-General of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO on the Passing of Master Bahram Beyzaie

The Secretary-General of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO, in a message, expressed condolences on the passing of Master Bahram Beyzaie, one of the prominent and influential figures in contemporary Iranian culture, art, and thought, and paid tribute to his lasting contribution to preserving cultural identity, national unity, and human dignity through his theatrical and cinematic works.

The late Master Bahram Beyzaie, as an inner voice of Iranian culture in the contemporary era, sought through his works to place the integrity and unity of this land above all else by connecting the indigenous identity of the Iranian nation and weaving together the threads of love and affection among the people of this land, across all ethnic groups and subcultures.

His poetic, philosophical, and literary theater, Ta’zieh, and cinema brilliantly demonstrated that safeguarding the name of Iran and respecting the dignity of its people are the keys to enduring legacy and immortality.

Perhaps the pinnacle of the late Beyzaie’s vision of the Iranian people’s attachment to their homeland can be heard in this scene from his film Bashu, the Little Stranger: a child from southern Iran, driven by the horrors of war and the destruction of his home and family in Khuzestan, had arrived alone in northern Iran, in Gilan, compelled by the harsh circumstances of his time. He says:

Iran is our homeland.

We share the same land and water.

We are the children of Iran.

I hereby extend my condolences on the passing of the late Master Bahram Beyzaie to the country’s distinguished and esteemed cultural and artistic community.

May the profound vision and thoughtful approach of this noble master continue to flow through and endure in Iranian culture.

Hassan Fartousi Secretary-General of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO
