International Youth Day: A Global Focus on the Potential and Initiatives of Young People

As a specialized agency of the United Nations, UNESCO has consistently emphasized the fundamental role of young people in promoting peace, intercultural dialogue and social justice, as well as in addressing global challenges such as climate change, inequality, unemployment, technological challenges, and social and cultural risks.
Each year, on the occasion of International Youth Day, the United Nations announces a central theme reflecting global priorities and the current needs of younger generations. In 2023, the theme was “Green Skills for Youth: Towards a Sustainable World”[1], which highlighted the need to develop environmental skills among young people and recognized them as pioneers in the transition to a green economy and a sustainable society. In 2024, the theme “From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development”[2] was chosen, underscoring the importance of empowering young people in information technology and harnessing the potential of the digital world to foster social growth, innovation and active participation. The theme for 2025 is “Local Youth Actions for the SDGs and Beyond”[3], which emphasizes the role of young people in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals at the national level and their initiatives to address the social, environmental and cultural needs of their communities.
