With the aim of showcasing and safeguarding the country’s biodiversity and cultural diversity, the Department of Environment, in collaboration with the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO, has published Iran’s Biosphere Reserves Atlas. The atlas has been prepared to introduce Iran’s sites inscribed in UNESCO’s World Network of Biosphere Reserves and to highlight the importance of sustainably conserving the country’s natural and cultural resources.
In the foreword to the atlas, Dr. Hassan Fartousi, Secretary-General of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO, highlights the role of biosphere reserves in linking sustainable development with the preservation and safeguarding of natural and cultural heritage, emphasizing the importance of close cooperation among national and international institutions.
He notes that these reserves are not merely natural habitats, but also treasures of human–nature coexistence that can inspire future generations to safeguard Iran’s natural and cultural heritage.
It is worth noting that the atlas, developed through the efforts of researchers and environmental experts in collaboration with scientific and local institutions, serves as a comprehensive reference illustrating Iran’s natural, cultural, and human richness.
