The Cyrus Human Rights Cylinder Inscribed on the UNESCO Register: Official Approval of the Cyrus Cylinder at UNESCO, a New Honor for Iranian Heritage

In a historic event that took place just minutes ago, on 6 November 2025, during the 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference in Samarkand, the Cyrus the Great Cylinder was officially recognized and endorsed by UNESCO Member States as one of the world’s earliest human rights charters, emphasizing respect for cultural diversity. This step once again highlights Iran’s international standing in safeguarding human heritage and universal values.

The aim of this initiative is to highlight the universal values embodied in this historic document, including tolerance, justice, and respect for cultural and religious diversity. The initiative is also regarded as being in line with UNESCO’s mission to promote peace, intercultural dialogue, and the safeguarding of human heritage. It is linked to the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), as the principles of the Cyrus Cylinder emphasize the promotion of an inclusive society based on cultural cooperation. This resolution, jointly submitted to the UNESCO General Conference by Iran, Tajikistan, and Iraq, emphasizes the global significance of the Cyrus Cylinder and calls on the Director-General of UNESCO to incorporate its principles into programs related to justice, human rights, and intercultural dialogue. It also calls on governments to work towards raising global awareness of the values embodied in this historic document.During the event in Samarkand, Dr. Hassan Fartousi emphasized: “The adoption of this resolution is not merely a national achievement; it is a global affirmation of a historical reality: that respect for humanity and cultural diversity was introduced to the world through Iranian civilization.”To watch the video accompanying this news item, click here.
