The First Global Assessment Report on the Role of UNESCO-Designated Sites for People and Nature Has Been Published

The report “People and Nature in UNESCO-Designated Sites: Local and Global Contributions” has been published by UNESCO. As the first comprehensive global assessment, the report examines the role of UNESCO-designated sites in generating tangible benefits for people and nature.

According to the report, more than 2,260 sites, including World Heritage Sites, Biosphere Reserves and UNESCO Global Geoparks, form an extensive network spanning over 13 million square kilometres and supporting the livelihoods of approximately 900 million people. These sites host a significant proportion of the world’s biodiversity and play an important role in carbon storage and climate regulation.

The report also emphasizes the need to strengthen ecosystem restoration, cross-border cooperation, the integration of these sites into climate policies, and participatory governance involving local communities. It identifies these sites as strategic assets for sustainable development and addressing environmental crises.
