UNESCO to Hold International Webinar on “Prison Education: Innovative Practices in UNESCO Learning Cities”
As part of the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities’ global webinar series, “Unlocking the Power of Lifelong Learning,” the webinar “Prison Education: Innovative Practices in UNESCO Learning Cities” will be held on Wednesday, October 14, 2026.
The webinar aims to explore innovative practices in UNESCO Learning Cities in providing lifelong learning opportunities for people in prison and to highlight the role of education in personal development, improving vocational skills, and facilitating their social and economic reintegration after release. By ensuring that people in prison have access to valuable lifelong learning opportunities, these cities support their personal growth, enhance their skills and employability, and help facilitate their successful return to society and reintegration into social and economic life after release.
The webinar will highlight the right of all individuals, including those in detention, to access education and showcase examples of initiatives by UNESCO Learning Cities in providing technical and vocational education and digital skills training, creating pathways to higher education, organizing arts and cultural activities, and offering library services in prisons. It will also examine the role of cooperation among local governments, civil society organizations, and prison authorities in creating inclusive learning opportunities.
Representatives of Clermont in France, Ras Al Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates, and Dakar in Senegal will also share their experiences and initiatives in educating people in prison and providing them with learning opportunities.
