Webinar on Learning Amid Crisis Held

The international webinar “Learning Amid Crisis: Advancing Literacy in Conflict-Affected and Post-Conflict Contexts” was held on 24 June 2026, at the initiative of the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL), to examine the role of literacy in ensuring learning continuity, supporting social reconstruction, and strengthening community resilience in times of crisis, war, and post-conflict recovery.

The webinar brought together experts and officials from South Sudan, Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Regional Centre for Quality and Excellence in Education to examine national and regional experiences in designing and implementing literacy programs in crisis situations. Speakers shared examples of alternative education programs, community-based learning, the use of emerging technologies, and flexible approaches, emphasizing the need to ensure continued learning opportunities for vulnerable groups.

The session also addressed the role of literacy in social reconstruction, strengthening community resilience, empowering women and young people, ensuring the quality of educational programs in crisis situations, and the importance of local community participation and cooperation among national and international institutions.

In conclusion, participants emphasized that literacy in crisis situations plays a vital role not only in developing foundational skills but also in advancing sustainable development, strengthening social cohesion, rebuilding communities, and fostering peace. Achieving these goals requires the development of flexible, inclusive educational programs tailored to the needs of affected communities.
