| The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has announced that it will hold a two-day international meeting in Paris to examine the challenges facing researchers and strengthen frameworks for protecting scientists’ freedom and safety. |

UNESCO has announced that the dialogue-based meeting on “The Freedom and Safety of Scientists” will take place on 8–9 June 2026 at the Organization’s headquarters in Paris.
The meeting will bring together senior officials from Member States, selected experts and representatives of the scientific community to examine the growing challenges facing researchers worldwide. Its primary objective is to identify practical approaches to strengthening national and international responses in support of scientists.
According to UNESCO, the meeting will address several topics, including the introduction of the Organization’s new assessment tool on the freedom of science and the safety of scientists; a review of reports submitted by Member States, focusing on progress made and existing gaps; and an exchange of views among experts and scientists on current challenges.
Participants will also examine validated solutions, share successful experiences and identify common priorities for developing international initiatives in this field.
The two-day event will be held in person and will comprise two segments: a “public” session for a wider audience and a “closed” session aimed at facilitating specialized, solution-oriented discussions among Member States and experts.
